Unveiling the Explosive Allegations: Jennifer Mistry’s Sexual Harassment Accusation Against Asit Modi and the Troubling Revelations on the Set of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah

On May 11, 2023, the popular television series Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah became embroiled in a controversy as Jennifer Mistry, renowned for her role as Mrs. Roshan Sodhi in the show, made serious allegations of sexual harassment against producer Asit Modi. Jennifer claimed that she decided to quit the show after the makers mistreated her when she attempted to leave after half a day’s work. This article delves into the events that unfolded thereafter, shedding light on the gripping saga.

In a shocking turn of events, Jennifer’s departure from the show after 15 years was accompanied by accusations of sexual harassment against Asit Modi. Adding to the turmoil, Monika Bhadoriya, also known as Bawri, recently came forward and revealed that she had been subjected to mistreatment while working on Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. Monika disclosed having experienced distressing thoughts of self-harm during that period. Furthermore, she opened up about the toxic work environment on the show’s set and the prolonged delay in receiving her payment for over a year.

According to reports, Jennifer made serious allegations against Asit Modi on May 11, accusing him of sexual harassment. She claimed that she decided to quit the show due to the mistreatment she endured when she tried to leave for her scheduled half-day, as had been communicated to the team in advance. Jennifer referred to the atmosphere as “male chauvinistic” and characterized those working on the show as “bonded labor.” A report in TOI highlighted that Jennifer Mistry filed a complaint against Modi, Project Head Sohail Ramani, and Executive Producer Jatin Bajaj for sexual misconduct in the workplace. The actress stated that she had shot her last scene on March 6 and never returned to the set afterward.

Responding to these allegations, Sohail Ramani, one of the accused, dismissed Jennifer’s claims, labeling her as “desperate” and asserting that her allegations were fabricated lies aimed at seeking cheap publicity. Producer Asit Modi, on the other hand, denied the sexual harassment allegations made by Jennifer Mistry and deemed them baseless. Modi stated that Jennifer had been dismissed from the show, and he possessed evidence to substantiate his claim. He emphasized that the allegations against him were mere falsehoods aimed at tarnishing his reputation. He declared, “This is just a fake and baseless allegation, and it holds no truth. She is just trying to malign my image. We sacked her from the show and my team. My director and the team asked her to leave the show. We have all the proof, and I am not talking just randomly. My production will soon provide you with all the evidence and documents.”

In an interview with India TV, Monika Bhadoriya revealed, “They (TMKOC makers) misbehave and treat people wrongly. They treat us like dogs. They usually halt everyone’s money, and when I left, they also stopped my payment, which was given after 1 year. I used to fight a lot; I used to go to the office frequently, and they never met, and they always told the team to inform me that they weren’t there.”

She accused the makers of withholding her dues, stating, “Too many times, they’ve not paid my money. At the time of my help, they did a lot of wrong things. My mother was a cancer patient; she did not have time, but they did not let me go there on time. I used to stay in the hospital at night and come to shoot during the day on an emergency basis when I had no work to do. They used to tell me that when we give you money, you have to do what we say. Munmun Dutta supported me on that. I had said that I do not want to work in such negativity. They threatened, ‘Do you think if you leave this show, I will let you work somewhere?'”

Monika expressed her support for Jennifer and stated, “I’m with Jennifer on her allegations because I’ve been there and experienced it.”

Responding to Jennifer Mistry Bansiwal’s accusations, Mandar Chandwadkar wondered why she had taken this course of action. He claimed to have no knowledge of the details surrounding their conflict and refuted the notion that Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah had a male chauvinistic environment. Mandar, who played the character of Mr. Atmaram Tukaram Bhide on the show, remarked, “It’s a happy place with a healthy environment.”

Following Mandar’s claims, Jennifer criticized him for supporting Asit Kumar Modi and insinuated that Mandar, being male, would unquestioningly follow Modi’s lead. She explained, “Mandar knows every single part of my life, every single minute of my life, he is so close to me. When he spoke against me, then I said I won’t tolerate this. He knows I have all the phone recordings with me, and that is the reason he is quiet.”

In response to the shocking revelations, the makers of the show released a statement, branding Jennifer as indisciplined, abusive, and someone who had misbehaved with everyone. However, Malav Rajda, the former director of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, dismissed these allegations as baseless and untrue. Rajda, who directed Jennifer Mistry Bansiwal for 14 years, stated, “Jennifer is one of the most jovial people on the sets. She is a happy-go-lucky person and gelled well with everyone. Be it the technical team, direction team, DOP, hair-makeup, or the co-stars, she was on good terms with everyone on the sets. I’ve been on the sets for 14 years, and Jennifer has never misbehaved with anyone ever in front of me. She has never been abusive on the sets.”

Following the accounts of Jennifer Mistry and Monika Bhadoriya, Priya Ahuja shared her own experience. Priya revealed how her character was neglected on the show and claimed that Asit Modi responded in a sexist manner when she inquired about her role. She stated that when she tried to reach out to the show’s producer regarding her work, her calls were ignored. On the rare occasion when Asit Modi did answer, he reportedly told Priya, “Why do you want to earn? Sit at home like a Queen. Your husband is earning.”

On May 26, Jennifer Mistry recorded her statement at the Powai Police station regarding the allegations against the Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah makers. She revealed, “I went to the Powai police station yesterday and recorded my statement. I arrived around 12 pm and left at 6:15 pm. I provided them with my entire statement. I was there for 6 hours. Now, the law will take its course.”

An FIR has been filed against Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah producer Asit Modi, show’s operations head Sohail Ramani, and executive producer Jatin Bajaj on charges of sexual assault. The case includes sections 354 and 509 of the IPC against all three individuals associated with TMKOC.

Jennifer reportedly claimed that the makers are attempting to create confusion and levelling baseless allegations against her. She emphasized that if she was truly problematic, why did they tolerate her for so long? She also questioned why she was brought back to the show after a previous departure. From the beginning, Jennifer has insisted on a public apology from the makers. She expressed confusion over Sohail Ramani contradicting his own statements, initially claiming she was abusive, and later stating that they were close friends involved in spiritual matters.
