A shocking incident unfolded on March 19, 2022, when Sabita Thanwani, a 19-year-old Indian-origin student, was found lifeless/murder in her student accommodation, her throat tragically cut. Recently, new developments emerged in the court reports, shedding light on the events leading up to her untimely demise.

According to the prosecution, prior to the murder, Thanwani had been in a relationship with Maher Maaroufe, a 23-year-old Tunisian man.

On that fateful day, both of them were present at the student accommodation when a neighbor heard screams and various unsettling noises emanating from their room.

In a shocking twist, Maaroufe, the prime suspect in the case, has pleaded guilty to killing Thanwani during a hearing at the Old Bailey court in London. He cited diminished responsibility as the reason for his guilty plea on charges of manslaughter. The court is set to sentence him in September, as per reports from PTI.

The incident sent shockwaves through the community, prompting an urgent manhunt by the Metropolitan police to apprehend Maaroufe. Officers discovered that he had left the building before their arrival and was spotted wearing a balaclava. Thanwani’s cause of death was determined to be a sharp force trauma to the neck, as revealed in the post-mortem examination.

After an intense search, officers managed to arrest Maaroufe on a Sunday, not far from the location where Thanwani’s lifeless body had been discovered the day prior, in the Clerkenwell area.

The loss of Thanwani deeply impacted her family, who lovingly remembered her as an “angel” with an infectious smile and a heart full of kindness. In a heartfelt statement, her family expressed their profound grief and admiration for their beloved daughter. They emphasized her dedication to helping others and her pursuit of a psychology degree at City University, which she hoped would enable her to make a positive difference in the world. They mourned the fact that her promising life was tragically cut short, robbing the world of her warmth and compassion.

As the trial unfolds and the sentencing approaches, the memory of Sabita Thanwani remains etched in the hearts of those who knew her, a reminder of the devastating consequences that can arise from such senseless acts of violence.
