Ahmedabad Rath Yatra Turns Chaotic as Building Collapse Injures Several

Ahmedabad, Gujarat: A festive atmosphere turned grim during the Rath Yatra in Ahmedabad as a building collapse left numerous individuals injured. The incident occurred on Tuesday, causing significant distress among the attendees and disrupting the procession.

Around 6 to 7 people were among those injured when a portion of a building suddenly gave way while the Rath Yatra was passing through the narrow roads of Shahpur, located in the Old City. This unfortunate incident unfolded on Friday evening, casting a shadow over the otherwise joyous event.

According to reports from news agency PTI, the roof of a cabin where a group of people were seated collapsed, leading to a dozen injuries. The victims were enjoying a vantage point to observe Lord Jagannath’s Rath Yatra. Minister of State for Home, Harsh Sanghavi, who was present during the procession, swiftly responded to the situation. He immediately took charge, coordinating with the police to ensure necessary measures were taken promptly.

In a heartwarming display of compassion, Minister Sanghavi personally comforted a young girl and a boy who were separated from their family members due to the collapse. A video capturing the minister wiping away the girl’s tears quickly went viral on social media platforms, showcasing his empathy amidst the chaos.

This unfortunate incident occurred while the procession was navigating the narrow roads of Shahpur in the Old City. “Approximately 10 to 15 individuals, including children, were sitting on the roof of a small cabin to enjoy the Rath Yatra. They all fell when the roof, made of tin sheets, suddenly gave way,” stated Minister Sanghavi, as reported by PTI.

Thankfully, swift action from the police resulted in the safe rescue of all those involved, with minor injuries reported. Minister Sanghavi ensured the tearful girl was reunited with her family, offering solace in a trying moment.

It’s important to note that the Rath Yatra, commencing from the Lord Jagannath Temple in Jamalpur earlier that day, is scheduled to conclude its 18-kilometer journey and return to the temple premises at approximately 8:30 PM. However, this incident has undoubtedly cast a somber atmosphere over the proceedings. Authorities will now undertake a thorough investigation into the building collapse to determine the cause and prevent future mishaps during such cultural events.
